Never heard of a trail run event incorporating a lilo derby? Neither had we so we thought, innovators that we are, the world NEEDS one. I mean, what a way to cool off after a massive ultra 1.5km trail run? You'll run from the football oval on a trail that leads you to the Caravan Park. Reaching the allowed put in point (that's fancy lilo speak for where you get on the river with your lilo). And downstream you go. You are a LILO PILOT! Yesssssss... always wanted to be a pilot! It's another1.5km downstream back to the footy oval, where you will exit riverbank left (ah, lilo pilot nomenclature makes us sound so damn outdoorsy), and a short spurt back to the final finish line of the entire festival. BYO flotation device (we suggest a hardy version that won't pop on the first rock it encounters) or you can order one when you register online. Lilos will be collected on the morning of the event (we suggest writing your name on it or tying something on that will make it easy to recognise – ever tried finding your lilo in amongst 100?) and transported to the put in. You MUST wear a helmet and shoes when in the river. a PFD and/or a wetsuit is not mandatory, but you might like it. Knee and elbow pads – well, if you're a safety-first kinda person. The rocks are hard and you will bump and scrape your way down. The river is not overly deep and you can stand up most of the way so watch your ankles.

Yes – it's as fun as it looks, probably more. Yes – you need a helmet (bike helmets are okay). Yes – surf lilos are the best if you are serious about winning. But other flotation devices (tyre tubes in particular) are good. Wetsuits? Your call – you have to run 1.5km to your tube... so maybe not. And it'll be summer, the river will be cold though.

Trust us - they go way faster and are tougher than any unicorn / shark / banana / spotted dog /llama flotation device, however fun they may be!
